FAQ

Before you head out

Quick answers about accounts, photo IDs and the rules on the sand.

Is Shell Forecast free?

Yes. Tides, weather, radar, beach search and the shell guide are free with no account, and the guide is free to browse in the app too. A free account adds your home beach, a shelling score, beach comparisons, your collection, field reports and 3 photo IDs to try. Only extra photo IDs cost money, and those plans are what keep the site running. There are no ads.

Do my 3 free photo IDs come back each month?

No. The 3 free IDs are a one-time trial. Monthly plans refill every month. Yearly plans give you that many IDs for the whole year, not each month. Packs of 10 or 25 can be added to any plan.

How does photo ID work?

Take or upload a photo of your shell. You get suggestions from the Florida shell guide, pick the one that matches, and it goes into your collection.

What are field reports?

Tides and weather can't tell you whether shells are washing up, or whether a beach was just renourished. Signed-in shellers post lots, some or few shells, renourishment or an access problem, with a photo. Approved reports show on that beach. We're just getting started, so many beaches won't have one yet.

Can I take live shells from Florida beaches?

Not in Lee County, which includes Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach and Boca Grande: only empty shells may be collected. Elsewhere, taking live shells generally requires a Florida saltwater fishing license, and many state parks ban it. Check local rules first.
